Kingfish Saltwater Fishing Lures

The kingfish is a migratory species of mackerel noted for its taste as a seafood delicacy. Kings primarily inhabit the Atlantic waters (from off the coast of North Carolina to the Florida Keys) and the Gulf of Mexico. Blue water anglers often fish for kingfish offshore using downriggers along with their saltwater rod-and-reels, working the boat in a drift, slow troll or power drift. However, kingfish are often spotted within a mile of the beach usually just beyond the breakers or along the ridges and artificial reefs formed by wrecks offshore. Once a kingfish hits the lure or live bait rig, the boat is typically slowed and the angler finds out just how big his king really is.

Kings are opportunistic carnivores and often feed in-and-out of bait fields on small fish or squid. The iridescent blue-green color along their backs and their silvery sides add to the kingfish’s tapered look. Juveniles are often mistaken for Spanish mackerel due to yellow spots on their flanks, but these fade as the kingfish matures. You can easily identify the Spanish mackerel from the young king by the black patch on the first dorsal fin of the Spanish mackerel. When trolling for Kingfish, it is important to remember the King's love for movement and action when selecting a lure or bait-rig. Kingfish can swim at speeds very similar to their cousin, the Wahoo mackerel.

Known for their blistering runs once they’re hooked, kingfish are among the most sought-after game fish from Texas to the coast of the Carolinas. Offshore anglers have dozens of kingfish fishing techniques and a lure bag full of kingfish lures with pre-rigged bait lines. Dozens of pro kingfish tournaments and tournament series have cropped up along popular Western Atlantic and Gulf Coast fishing spots. The saltwater tackle world record of 90 lbs. was made off the Florida Keys in the mid-70s but kingfish tournament anglers today still post very respectable weights for single and aggregate catches.
